I loved this place so much that after a weekend stay I decided to stay for nearly 5 months.
It is laid back and friendly, right on the beach, and secure. Some of the rooms have private bathrooms but there are also communal bathrooms on each floor.
As far as atmosphere goes, it depended on the people staying there. Some nights it was quiet and chill and then some nights it was party central.
If you are backpacking in the LA area, this is the place to stay...Have fun.

Hey yeah I hung out on pier avenue every single day because that is where the hostel is!!
It is right above the Beach Club bar. Right next to the Lighthouse.
I love Sharkeys and Hennessys we always had so much fun there.
Check it out some night.

Fast forward this many years and I went on another trip to Hermosa Beach this past July and not much has changed at Surf City! I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a great hostel in the Los Angeles area!
My husband and I stayed here more for "old times sake" than anything, I wanted to share the hostel experience with him since I Had told him many stories about living here.
The manager Odile is amazing and will help you out with anything you need and welcome you!
