Hey guys, when I was away I went on a pub crawl in Berlin and had an awesome night out! I remember some of you guys went on one in Barcelona? I was interested to hear about some of the pub crawls that you guys have been on when you were backpacking and I dont mean how you got drunk and lost the rest of the crew!! (butterj)

More from a research perspective such as the cost, no. of pubs, time at each pub, free/discounted drinks? and what could have made the crawl better. Im looking into this as it could be possible to come up with some kind of format here.

Ok ok you can tell me some cool drunk stories too!

Some people deride them for being cheesy and full of Americans, but the pub crawls in Barcelona were damn fun. I went on a few, a couple by cheating and mooching the stamp from someone elses arm, and they were all really crowded and wild. You dont go to Barcelona anyway for a cultural expirience in my opinion. I went on one in ome that was more reserved and more conservative with the liquor. But it showed you some sights which was cool.

Heh.. I thought the Barcelona pub crawl was cheesy and too full of Americans. Then again, it was fun, but it was just TOO many people... I prefer something just as wild but perhaps with a smaller crowd.

I did the Backpackers Pub Crawl and the Literary Pubcrawl in Dublin and both were *excellent*. The groups were much smaller.. the former was almost as wild as the Barcelona one, and the latter was pure entertainment, spurred on by pints upon pints of the black stuff.

I don't go on many pub crawls. I like to root myself down for the night.

I went on one in Victoria, BC. We ended up only spending 45min tops at each bar and the person running it wouldn't let us catch up to them later. It kinda sucked that way. They took us to a couple cheap places and a couple more expensive places.

Has anyone ever gone on a 'Drink a small town dry' event? You load up a few school buses and drive 30min out of the city to a small one-bar town and you usually end up drinking their entire stock. Great fun! Curiously the locals don't particularly like it.

I did one in Dublin that was with an older crowd that wasn't very crazy but we had traditional Irish music at every bar. It consisted of people from all over; not all Americans which was nice. Thinking back on it though, it clearly was a "touristy" thing to do but then I suppose all pub crawls are, aren't they. I wouldn't do it again in Dublin; been there, done that, but it was fun.

Actually I just remember a funny story from that night but that would belong in a drunk thread.

erm yes that was a strange night, started chating to an irish band and all of a sudden the flag waving person was gone. damn

i only went on that one arranged one, was a bit shit really (due to me getting lost and walking round barcelona on my own very drunk)

my second complaint was lack of women, i recon loads of guys all have the same idea that there will be loads of women so it ends up a bit of a sausage fest.

ive been on loads in england though with mates, can be a great laugh.

if anyone is intrested there are some great webpages on good routes in england

http://www.beerintheevening.com/crawls/gen.shtml
http://members.aol.com/whitelegg/monopoly/go.htm
http://www.nottinghamcamra.org/nottmcitypu...crawl130703.htm

just gogle the city your in to find some great route's they often take you to pubs that are more often off the beaten track, with more locals so should make it quite good fun.

Cool guys, thanks for the info so far

Last night I went into the area where the crawl would be based to check out some of the different venues for space and suitability for having a pub crawl (Dont you love that feeling of being a loner when at the pub, like when your waiting for your mates to arrive?!).

I didnt go to do any canvassing (for free/discounted drinks) with managers as I plan to do it at a later stage. However by chance I did meet one manager.

Im just interested to know if anyone has come across this before...So I walk into the pub and this guy approaches me (the manager) and asks if I am a tourist - I reply no and he then asks am I with a friend that is a tourist, no again. He then tells me Ill have to leave because he has only a tourist licence. WTF? How crazy is that? Basically you can only go in there if youre a tourist or have a tourist friend accompanying you. I told him I thought that was interesting and then began to talk business and started negotiating with him.

If on my crawl I took you to this pub would you be annoyed that it was only a tourist pub with no locals? Or do you think it wouldnt matter as you would really only socialise with the people on the crawl and not even realise it was a tourist only pub?

Anyway if this pub crawl gets off the ground all you tpunks are invited to come on it for free!!

cheers
ev

I dunno, I've never done an organized crawl, but in the little historic district where I work theres a decent number of pubs/bars to crawl through. Starting at the Judges Bench, then La Palapa, the Brewery, Tiber River Tavern, Whistlestop, Cacao Lane, Sidestreets (my place du employment), and the Phoenix Emporium.

Only several times I've completed the entire crawl, and was hammered by the time I hit the Phoenix.

Dunno what that has to offer, but it sure as hell is a shitload of fun!

I don't think I'd mind if I went to a tourist pub here or there as long as its a good time. I like meeting travellers.

As much as I like more local hangs, I don't mind a tourist trap pub/club as long as it's full of *cool* tourists. That is - backpackers & independent travelers, rather than a bunch of middle-aged people on an organized tour.

You'd be hard pressed to find me in a Margaritaville anywhere in the world, but I've been to a few tourist/traveler bars that were entirely TOO much fun, and they were a great way to make new friends before heading out for the night.

On a pub crawl, I like a good mix of local joints and tourist-oriented party places. The variety is nice... and it's always fun to see the locals freak out when a rowdy group of foreigners comes in to drink the place dry.

ev what contry are you planning to do this in, i agree with everyone not really a problem but i would make surn not all are like that on your crawl as they will miss a great part of the city atmosphear, also it might be a good one to start with as you can do all the talking and announcments with out pissing off the locals

They have organized pub crawls?? That's so crazy.

I live in the epitome of drunken hood in Wisconsin. Supposedly this town has the most bars per capita and most bars on one street in the country. A pub crawl here is just bar hopping pretty much. We get together with a bunch of people and start out somewhere and work our way around around this like 4 block stretch hitting bar after bar.

They do drink specials where it's all you can drink on nights for 5 bucks with college id at some bars. The mixed drinks are usually watered down as all hell but beers still beer.

We don't do "downtown" very often but even when we head out to our small town bars it's like a dollar for a tapper, 2 bucks a bottle and tops 2.50 for a mixed drink.

It's going to be so hard to go some place where I actually have to stretch my wallet to get drunk!!

I'm going to have to go with London for a great pub crawl. although i know they have organized ones, i think these take away from the fun. this last may (2005) i was in london for 3 days by myself and decided to make the most of my time there (i did the monument thing years ago). I highly recommend starting early in the afternoon (around one o'clock) and picking a specific area of the city. i hadn't done too much research before but knew i wanted to check out the red lion right across from parliament. HUGE mistake. it was filled with american businessmen sipping half pints and talking loudly. i hit the tube and headed southwest of the river to the wandsworth/clapum (sp.?) junction this place had a lot of great local pubs. i would check out www.fancyapint.com for a good guide to london pubs. i wandered around a few and by chance wandered into a pub full of chelsea fans (this was the day they won the premiership) by dinnertime i was properly drunk, met a bunch of cool locals, got to taste some great british beers and somehow convinced two kiwi girls to "show me around" the next night. top notch. planning on doing it again march 2006 with a brit pal of mine...

if london is too chiche for a pub crawl, check out savannah, georgia for st. patricks day. this is similar to their mardi gras only less sleezy. (i.e. no flashing for beads)
there is no open container law and bars let you take drinks from bars to bars. there are little to no cover charges ($5 tops) and beers are a great cheap option ($2.50-4 for miller/bud drafts) there are a bunch of college kids looking to hook up but everyone stays somewhat sane. the bouncers at most of the bars/clubs look the other way towards underage drinking (i was carded once) and as long as you don't fight or take a leak in public the cops could care less. Check out river street. one thing is to book a motel room in advance (the cheap ones go quick) or to meet some SCAD students and try and get a place to crash in the dorms.

hope this helps
