doing a season..?
Hey!
Im back , i have been reading every now and then but not posting due to extreme lack of travels!!! i finally had my first brain surgery two weeks ago and will hopefully have the second within the next two months which is starting to open up the possibility of travel again for me soon, so im thinking...
.. i'd like to do a season working in canada at a ski field (or nearby) with a wee sidetrip to new york... and whilst it'd be a little crazy trying to scrape the funds together before the end of the year i dont think it'd be impossible
I floated the idea past my younger sister and instead of telling me im nuts and should just be recovering (lol its a bit of a 'theme' in all the conversations i have at the mo) she is seriously considering coming with! which would be so so sweet, and my mum is so jealous she said she would come for the new york component (we all wanna do a week or two before christmas in the snow etc ).
So has anyone done a season in canada or somewhere similar? i have heaps of questions!! my biggest concern at this stage is how feasible it is economically, like do u make just enough to scrape by or is there $$ to do a little travel at the end etc?
Im crazy keen on the idea at the moment and think id need to commit soon in order to sus visas so if anyone has any experience, pointers, suggestions etc please me hit me back
stoked to be back on here

I don't know much about it, but I know a girl who use to bartend in Whistler over the ski season and my cousin worked at Kananaskis for a season or two. If I remember right she had free skiing and accommodations close by. I believe they resort owned the accommodations so the rent was reasonable.
I think you can do well enough to travel a bit after. Another option would be do a season at a ski resort and then do a season at a golf course. I know a few people who did that as well and had an awesome time.

I've worked ski seasons here in Australia (doing housekeeping and waitressing) and a lot of the people there do seasons in canada too... so, do you know anyone who works at any of the ski resorts in New Zealand? they might know people who know people in canada, or something. haha, that was probably the least helpful comment ever! funny thing is I know a lot of people who have done it, but I don't really know much about it at all... although I have heard that getting staff accommodation is harder in some canadian resorts than it is here (ie a lot of workplaces don't provide accommodation so you have to find it yourself).
apart from that, I have only heard positive things! I think you should go for it! just start emailing lots of people, you've got plenty of time to do research! (I'm assuming you're talking about next winter, right?)

LostFarmBoy (from Oz) is in Canada right now, working. Not sure which job he lined up, but I hear he's working...

Frist off - Yay for the surgery!! Im so glad you didnt get bumped again!!
Secondly - I have no idea. As far as I heard through the grapevine you should earn enough to travel a bit. I have a cousin that worked in Canada for a a few months doing housekeeping on a ski resort, I will ask him about it for you.
Third - im trying to get to Canada at the end of the year as well, so if it all works out for both of us we should try a meet up.
