Eastern Europe - Itinerary
Hey everybody, long-time lurker here. I've finally managed to find time and money for a backpacking trip to Europe. I'll be heading there for three weeks in May. I'll be landing in Paris May 8, and staying for four days. Then, I'll be flying to Budapest for another four days. Then I'll be heading to Prague and Vienna. I'll be flying off to Bristol on May 25 for a vanity side trip in Bath for 3 days (a huge sucker for all things Jane Austen) before flying home. I'm currently stuck on the Prague/Vienna part. I would like to go on a day trip on either of those places. I've narrowed the choices down to Bratislava (Vienna) and Cesky Krumlov. I'm a culture-loving person while the girl I'm going with is into nature. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks

Go with Cesky Krumlov...from everything I'd heard, it is even more cool than Prague. Think of the reasons you're going to Prague, and distill the attractions down even further.
Of course, if you "collect" countries, and are trying to run up your total, Bratislava has that advantage. Plus, it is one of those "new" and "upcoming" cities vying for the title of the next Prague, much like Ljubljana, Slovenia's capital...
Honestly, though, I don't imagine you can wrong with either choice...

Haven't been to Cesky, but I enjoyed Bratislava. It's small and quirky and the friendliest city we've visited in Eastern Europe. People went out of their way to help us on multiple occasions, which is uncommon.

I loved Bratislava, but I've also heard great things about Cesky Krumlov and really wish I'd gone.. so if it was me I'd choose Cesky!

yep, those are the perils of asking travelers their opinions.
They usually contradict and wil likely have no bearing on your experience, whatever you choose. That's what makes the whole travel thing so fun - it's utterly personal.
good luck!

Thanks everybody! I'm going to Cesky, and by all your replies, I will try to make time in Vienna for just a little bit of Bratislava. They both sound amazing!

Best of all worlds. It's so quick to get to Bratislava from Vienna, that sounds like a good option. You can just do a day trip and still get a sense of the city.
