Anyone have any ideas/experience of getting a career overseas?

I'm getting anxious to leave the States again but want to keep gaining experience in the work force.

Any advice/websites/book reccomendations are welcomed

If you are talking an EU country. Temp residency permits are a bitch, but doable if you are serious and ready to do the paperwork. If you have a relative in another country, its much easier. Good luck

Thanks guys.

I have experience in Marketing Communications, which I feel may be a disadvantage since it's not that specialized.

I would love to work over in Europe, anywhere I can find a good opportunity, UK, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Switzerland....

You should consult with a immigration lawyer. You'd be amazed at the number of them that specialize in Americans trying to relocate to the EU. And you will find a lot of them living in the country you want to move to. It all comes down to your willingness to go through the redtape and the time consuming process of it.

The country you are heading to. They know the legalities of that country far better and can also lead you to the proper people. ya know!

You could also talk to some global recruiters who have offices in the countries you would like to work in. They may be willing to give you a sense for job opportunities with someone of your background in those particular job markets. Do some google searches for international recruiters, top global recruiters, phrases like that and then go to their websites, poke around and send some emails out. You may hear something back, you may not - they are busy but it's worth a shot. Make sure you have a very profesional, up to date resume to send as well (and most countries outside North America refer to a resume as a CV (which stands for Curriculum Vitae)). Good luck!

Grab a copy of "Work your way around the world" by Susan Griffith. She offers hundreds of pages of advice and job ideas for each continent, plus all the red tape infos.

Thanks guys! I have some research to do. My best option right now is to get over with the company I'm with, but I want a back-up plan if that doesn't work out.

Any work experience abroad looks good on a resume. It takes alot of motivation to travel to another part of the world to set yourself up a job.

There was a great book called How to Get a Job in Europe but it's now out of print - you might be able to find a used copy on Amazon or whatnot. It's loaded with good info not only on visa requirements, etc., but which industries and what websites to look at for each country...

It's not out of the question, I've been searching the DC area

I'm stressed and nervous about finding something by the end of the month. If the job I interviewed for falls through, I'm going to try really hard to get over to Germany.

Regardless, I'll make it out there sometime sooner than later.

Hey love! I am actually doing the same thing in Australia now! I am an American too so I am used to the visas. BUNAC is a good company to look into for starters; however, Australia is a bit easier on getting big people jobs now that they are in need of employees. Look into the 462 visa and from there you can get a skilled migration visa.
