It's really REALLY amazing how little you actually need. And anyway, its not like you're giving it up forever. I'm living out of a bitty daypack half the summer while I'm on a study abroad. I figure the less I have to schlep around the better, and I'll still have it when I get back.

you can always try to live out of your pack for a week before you leave home. you soon sort out what you use and what you dont. summer is good as you can always wash stuff out and it dries super quick provided its light. i always take a sarong as it is the most versatile item in your pack- a skirt, curtain, tablecloth, sunshade, towel- im still finding uses for it. so light it drys in minutes.
i also enjoy buying skimpy tops in the places i stay in like barcelona and rome for clubbing as they also make great souvenirs to take home. flipflops are also essential, and some earplugs if you intend on staying in some large dorms.
ciao for now

hey, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on the order they put their stuff into a top-loading pack?? Just curious as to things you might be more likely to keep at the bottom/top, outside pockets... should I even consider keeping anything in the outside pockets considering pick-pocketing and whatnot?

here is mine, i carry a rei gemini pack, it splits into two packs
More or less this is pretty much my concrete packing list. Odds are pretty good it will be pruned later on for space or necessity.
This list is intended for late summer early fall, and doesn't make provisions for extreme cold weather, because I figure I can handle that when it gets cold.
I have test packed all of the primary items into my bag and I have about 25% of my 3000 cubic inch bag and it weighs less than 35 pounds. if you carry a larger bag than I, than you will have no issue packing other things such as a tent and sleeping bag, or what ever loot you pick up on your trip, I actually think if I were to forego underwear I could pack a tent and sleeping bag no problem.
The clothing part also assumes I am wearing something off the list at most times, like the bag will only have two pairs of pants in it at any given point in time. A lot of people can also get by with less shirts than me, but I really like to wear two at a time.
Primary items:
Batteries AA size, I need 12-16 to get started. (luckily all the electronics I intend to take with the exception of my Ibook need AA's)
Water-proof flashlight that takes AA batteries. (dark trips to pee can end tragically without one)
Camera and SD cards and card read and remote for camera.
Ibook, power brick, and protective sleeve
Pens and small notebook (sometimes You just cant find a place to plug in your laptop)
Small Carabiners (for hooking small stuff and small bags to the daisy chain on the outside of my pack).
Motorcycle helmet bags, they come in handy for a lot of things like pillows or bags for shopping
Waterproof matches or lighter.
Zip lock bags. (keep things dry, wet things wet, and separate)
Flat toilet paper in a zip-lock bag.( toilet paper isn't free or easy to find everywhere)
None perishable foods, like granola and energy bars.
Camel back water holder
Octagon soap (you can wash everything with it).
Toothbrush and other misc toiletries and Stuff to shave with.
2 wash cloths, one for washing one for drying.
Important documents to take and duplicates in separate zip-lock bags.
Passport
Birth certificate
Eyeglass prescription
Emergency contacts
Baseball hat (scotchguarded so it is water proof)
Clothing (in compression bags) compressions bags are awesome
2 t-shirts
2 sleeveless shirts
2 button down shirt (gotta look nice sometimes)
1 hoodie (scotchguarded so it will be water proof)
4 pairs of socks + an extra pair in a zip-lock bag (dry socks are always nice to have in case of emergency)
3 pairs of underwear + and extra pair in a zip-lock bag (dry undies can brighten the darkest day) on a side note to save space, I could just freeball
1 pair of shorts
1 pairs of Jeans
1 pair of comfy track pants
Luxuries only if space provides
Tent or bivy sack.
Sleeping bag
Origami paper
Eros silicon based personal lube, (it has literally 100's of uses aside from my favorite).
Post cards from home to share with people.
A stuffed animal (every trip needs a mascot)
Blank CD's (for sharing pics and mailing hard drive back ups back home)
Gloves and liners, (but this can wait till it gets cold)
technical jacket, (can also wait till it is cold).
that soudns pretty complete

that lube in particular makes a decent moisterizer when you dont have lotion. you can get stuck things unstuck with it, quiet sticky hostel door hinges Great for an oil free body massage
will temporarily water proof leather boots. but not for long. if you have a tick you can drown them into releasing from your skin.
It can be used to shin latex and rubber clothing (not that i have any, but if i did i could. )
do i really need to keep going.
oh and it doesnt destroy condoms like a lot of lubes

I shop around, but my usuals are:
twisted pleasure by Trojan :greenguy:
Bubble green lock
My mobile (cam, vid, everything in my little baby even MSN and t.v and net. even music)
one of my official DJ_VeeeNoM T-Shirts
my black and white wrist band
my green aviator shades
mad socks(no ankle) and low rise briefs (they make no space what so ever!)
I used to go around with my zippo but not anymore cause I quit smoking for gut!
oh well I have these 2 things I don't get off of me no matter what; a little bracelet (nothing fancy just something Reggie got me as a gift from italy or was it Colombia well someplace) and then my white sea coral necklace, oh oh and my anklelace (Which I made). Oh And my Dog tags.
My wallet is also something I tend to travel with alot
2 surf short
1 jean + the one I tend to travel with on
1 Kasual dress shirt + the one I travel with
2 military belts (black and white or green)
iPod Nano
I don't go crazy with the packing I perfer buying what I need on the trip (besides I'm a shop-a-holic so I feel good)
Now it also depends on where I'm heading I might take my skates or my shorty and with that the gloves and rest of equip.

My pack is pretty much what everyone has already described. My thoughts on a couple things...
Running stuff
I love to go for a run in each city I backpack (great way to see the city). Problem is: dirty, sweaty running clothes are not nice to carry around in your pack. I've found Nike Dri-fit are amazing. As the name suggests (shocker) they really absorb sweat and keep you dry. This also makes it easy to wash them often since you know they'll dry quickly.
Contacts
If you're a contact lense wearer, look into getting extended wear contacts for your trip, so you wear the same pair for a month. This eliminates having to carry around boxes of new contacts and spares, as well as contact solution (and that bottle of contact solution is heavy!). Also, since you're backpacking, chances are you're staying up really late at night (or staying out the entire night altogether), and being able to leave in your lenses 24/7 without worry, pain, or mess is infinitely better.
Underwear
I vote for going commando. Granted I can't speak for the guys, but ladies, really we don't need them. They serve very little purpose, but take up extra space, and are more laundry to worry about. Plus, without underwear you never have that dreaded "panty line", which is never attractive. Granted you could wear a thong to evade panty lines, but if you're on a long train trip, commando is so much more comfortable than a thong or underwear.
Jewelry
I leave it all at home. Even the fake stuff. So many thieves can't tell the difference and it will make you a target regardless of whether or not it's actually valuable.
Running, contacts, (lack of) underwear, and jewelry. Hmmm...I swear I put more in my pack than that!
