I spent 2 years programming using ArcView - does that count ?

holy crap!! i use this software for a living!!! i didn't think that anyone else in the world knew about it!! i write programs for it, make maps, manipulate data, i should be able to help. What sort of course are you doing??

im currently doing a degree in human geography and european politics
as for the geography bit i use arcview for mgi and im having to do all this coursework on designing maps etc....ugh i hate arcview"!

if i have to produce a map showing population density is it better to produce a choropleth or dot map

How are u showing the different areas for the populations?? Are you using census districts or something? i wouldn't use a dot map cause the populations are being showed for AREAS i'm gathering, not for specific POINTS on a map.
Hope this makes sense and maybe helps a little.
I'll be happy to try and answer any other q's you have.
